Are Oil Stocks The New Bae?

...the markets just swiped right on'em.

PUMPS AND THE BUMPS...

May be an MC Hammer song to dance to, but you may think twice about doing the 2-step next time you're at the gas station as prices at the pump may get a little rocky soon.

This past weekend, some of Saudi Arabia's oil facilities came under attack by drones causing about 6% of the world's supply (yes, the world Craig) to go up in flames.

WHY THIS IS HAPPENING...

There's a lot going on abroad particularly a love triangle that includes Israel and Saudi Arabia. Neither of these folks are down with Iran which is why Iranians aren't afraid to put paws on anyone but their kinfolk from Yemen decided to do the dirty work instead. Since basic economics depends on supply and demand, gas prices are now about to get lifted because supply has decreased so demand will increase, thus raising gas prices. Rising gas prices helps the top and bottom lines for energy companies and that's why their stock prices were gettin' high on their own supply yesterday.

THE RETURN...

The entire energy sector was extra litty yesterday including stocks like Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM) and Chevron (NYSE: CVX).

FOR THE NEWB IN YOU...

Top line is fancy talk for total revenue and bottom line is a company's net profit. During a stock's earnings report, Wall Street projects top and bottom line goals for companies and when they don't achieve them, it's called a "miss" but when they do it's a "beat." (ex. "Exxon Mobil reported a beat on top line revenue but a miss on bottom line profit.")

YOU AND SOMEBODY'S SON...

Better be ready for the lights, camera, action.Tinder (NASDAQ: MTCH) has decided to hit the small screen with its first ever TV series but with all the other original content platforms (check out Issue 98) it may have to wait in line.

WHY THIS IS HAPPENING...

Tinder has realized that each bae needs guidance when keeping #RelationshipGoals at all-time levels, that's why it started sharing original articles and videos about dating and baecations here. Well, they know the name of the game is to rank #1 in our phone usage lists and what better way then to make long-form content like a TV show. Heck, even Walmart (NYSE: WMT) and Costco (NASDAQ: COST) are dibble and dabblin'. But don't think that the content is all relationship advice, it's just regular shows to keep couples together this cuffin' szn.

THE RETURN...

Match Group is up 81% so far this year.

FOR THE NEWB IN YOU...

IAC/InterActiveCorp (NASDAQ: IAC) is a majority owner of Match Group (NASDAQ: MTCH).

ALL EYEZ ON...

Energy stocks.

Since drones did the Heisman on Saudi oil refineries, energy stocks beat the rest of the market up, up, up, up, up, up, up. That means that they are under heavy watch right now, especially since they also have a direct correlation with recessions that experts are predicting is coming sooner than later. There are a few stocks and ETFs that you should be mindful of during this time.

Wanna hear it? Here it goes:

  • Stocks: Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM); Chevron (NYSE: CVX); Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB); ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP); Hess (NYSE: HES); Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX); BP (NYSE: BP); Valero (NYSE: VLO)

  • ETFs: Vanguard Energy ETF (VDE); Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE); iShares U.S. Oil & Gas Exploration & Production (IEO)
